The Austin Transit Partnership (ATP) proposes to implement a 9.8-mile light rail line connecting Downtown Austin to North, South, and East Austin. Beginning at the intersection of Guadalupe Street and 38th Street to the north, the corridor extends south, traversing Downtown using Guadalupe, 3rd, and Trinity Streets before crossing Lady Bird Lake on a new dedicated light rail bridge. South of the lake, the corridor splits into two branches; one continuing further south along South Congress Avenue to Oltorf Street, while the other extends southeast along East Riverside Drive to just west of State Highway 71 near the Austin Bergstrom International Airport.
The project includes construction of 15 stations and an O&M facility near the airport along with the purchase of 25-30 vehicles. Service is planned to provide trains every five minutes during daytime hours, and every 7.5 minutes in evenings on the main section of the line, with service every ten minutes during and 15 minutes in evenings on each of the two branches. ATP believes that the project will increase the transportation network capacity to meet existing and future travel demands to sustainably support Austin’s population and employment growth ensuring continued vitality and economic health of the City and the region. The project is also anticipated to improve transit access between affordable housing and jobs and connectivity to regional activity centers designated in local land use plans.
